The History of School of Liberal Arts and Science
SLAS is a public charter school operated by a non-profit corporation, Texas Language Charter, Inc. The Texas Language Charter, Inc. Board of Directors is responsible for the management of SLAS. SLAS currently serves students in grades pre-kindergarten through tenth grade. SLAS, then known simply as Texas Language Charter, was originally granted a five year charter by the Texas State Board of Education in 1998. That charter was extended for the maximum term of an additional ten years. SLAS was started by a group of educators seeking to serve the needs of Hispanic students in Oak Cliff. SLAS has grown dramatically in the last five years, and currently serves more than 720 students.
